Pete Alonso is not happy with his performance since joining the Baltimore Orioles. Through his first 13 games, Alonso admits he has not been performing to his standards. The player acknowledges his performance isn’t meeting expectations after signing a five-year, $155 million contract with Baltimore.
Alonso Averages .176
Alonso is aware of his struggles. After going 0-for-3 with a walk in the O’s 6-3 loss to the Giants, Alonso said he expects more out of himself. He said it’s frustrating. His batting average has dropped to .176 with an OPS of .538.
His only home run came on March 31. It was against former Mets teammate Jacob deGrom during the Orioles’ 8-5 loss to the Rangers.
Since knocking a single in an 8-3 win over Texas on April 1, Alonso has gone 3-for-32 over his past eight games. “This is not my standard. Results-wise, yeah, it’s unacceptable for me, and I will be better. I know that. But yeah, it’s not fun,” Alonso said.
Missed Opportunities Against San Francisco
Alonso had multiple opportunities in key situations against San Francisco. In the first inning, Adley Rutschman hit a two-out double. This put Alonso in a position to drive in a run against Landen Roupp. However, Alonso struck out looking.
In the third, with the Orioles trailing 1-0, Alonso came to the plate with runners on second and third. Rutschman had hit his second double. Alonso struck out swinging.
Alonso grounded out in the fifth and walked in the eighth.
“First at-bat, I thought I did a good job of laying off some pitcher’s pitches, and he got me. And then, I got over-aggressive my next two at-bats, I let that seep into my next two at-bats, which for me, it’s unacceptable,” Alonso said. “I wish I could have had some better at-bats in those spots. I just need to be better.”
Vow to Improve
Alonso said he feels bad. He said that a lot of people believe in him. He also said he believes in himself, but he’s not delivering results. “I will. I just haven’t. But I will.”
Manager Craig Albernaz knows Alonso’s struggles aren’t from a lack of preparation.
Alonso stated that if he’s not producing in big spots with guys on base, it’s not good for the team, but he will be better.
