Arsenal have completed the signing of Spain international Ona Batlle on a free transfer, following her departure from Barcelona. The move sees one of the world’s most highly-rated full-backs join the Gunners on a long-term contract.
It is understood that Batlle has agreed a four-year deal, which includes an option for an additional year. The 27-year-old defender is widely regarded as one of the best in her position globally.
Batlle expressed her excitement about the move, stating, “Arsenal is one of the biggest clubs in the world and I can’t wait to feel the joy of playing in front of our supporters at Emirates Stadium alongside so many great players.” She added, “I want to win trophies and I feel this is the right place to achieve that.”
A Career Defined by Success
Batlle concluded a highly successful three-year spell at Barcelona before making the switch to north London. During her time with the Catalan giants, she was a regular fixture, making a total of 114 appearances for the club.
Her tenure at Barcelona was marked by team honours, as the club secured three successive league titles. Batlle also played a key role in Barcelona lifting two European cups. Notably, she started for Barcelona in their Champions League final defeat by Arsenal in 2025.
On the international stage, Batlle has also enjoyed considerable success. She has earned 76 caps for Spain, contributing to their triumph at the World Cup in 2023. She was also part of the Spain squad that finished as runners-up to England at Euro 2025.
Her individual performances have also garnered widespread recognition. Batlle was named in the prestigious Fifa Best XI in both 2024 and 2025, underscoring her consistent form at the highest level of the game.
Managerial and Club Endorsement
Arsenal manager Renee Slegers voiced her delight at the acquisition of the Spanish defender. “I’m delighted that we’ve been able to bring Ona to the club,” said Slegers, highlighting the impact Batlle is expected to make.
Slegers further described Batlle as “a hugely experienced full-back with strong attacking intent and great physical attributes.” The manager also noted Batlle’s winning mentality, adding, “She’s a winner and we want to go for more wins together.”
Clare Wheatley, Arsenal’s director of women’s football, echoed these sentiments, emphasising Batlle’s proven pedigree. “Ona’s track record at both club and international level speaks for itself,” Wheatley stated.
Wheatley continued, “She’s a proven winner with a hunger to add more trophies. We’re delighted to bring one of the best defenders in the world to Arsenal.” The club’s leadership clearly sees Batlle as a crucial element in their future plans.
Batlle’s career journey began in Spain, where she graduated from Barcelona’s academy before making her senior debut for Madrid CFF in 2017. She then gained regular first-team experience at fellow Spanish top-flight side Levante.
The defender moved to England in 2020, joining Manchester United where she made 77 appearances. Batlle subsequently returned to Barcelona as an established Spain international before her latest move to Arsenal. She is set to wear the number 22 shirt for her new club.
It is believed that Arsenal had secured a pre-contract agreement to bring Batlle to the club earlier this year, demonstrating their long-term interest in the player.
Arsenal’s Transitional Period and Ambitions
Arsenal’s latest signing comes as the club looks to build on a transitional year. Despite winning the Champions League in 2025, Arsenal were disappointed not to have challenged properly for the Women’s Super League title last season.
The club has undergone a period of change, with several big-name players coming towards the ends of their contracts at Arsenal and moving on. Among those departures were Republic of Ireland captain Katie McCabe and established England international Beth Mead.
However, Arsenal have actively worked to reinforce their squad through shrewd signings. The club has been proactive in its transfer business, finalising deals early for key targets.
England midfielder Georgia Stanway also signed a pre-contract agreement earlier this year. Arsenal have further bolstered their ranks by signing Switzerland midfielder Reuteler and Germany striker Cerci on free transfers.
While attention has been on another Spanish star, with two-time Ballon d’Or winner Alexia Putellas joining London City Lionesses on Wednesday, Arsenal’s focus has clearly been on securing top talent like Batlle.
The arrival of Batlle, a player with a proven track record of success at both club and international levels, signals Arsenal’s clear intent to compete for major honours and challenge at the top of the Women’s Super League.
