Ohio State’s Ryan Day Sets High Recruiting Standards

Ohio State’s head coach, Ryan Day, has outlined the program’s stringent recruiting philosophy. According to Day, Ohio State aims to recruit players with the potential to be first or second-round NFL draft picks.

‘First or Second Rounder’ Recruiting Policy

During an appearance on the Not Just Football podcast, Ryan Day discussed Ohio State’s recruiting expectations. Day said that there is an expectation that when players come to Ohio State, they are aiming to be a first or second-round NFL draft pick, regardless of their position.

Day added that if players do not reach this standard, Ohio State ‘probably isn’t the right place’ for them.

Success on the Field

Day’s high recruiting standards have translated to success on the field. During his tenure, Day has led Ohio State to an overall record of 82-12 and a 55-5 record in conference play. He has also guided Ohio State to two Big Ten titles and the 2024 National Championship.

Ohio State has consistently had a top-five recruiting class each year since 2020. The program currently boasts the No. 3 recruiting class in the 2027 cycle, according to the Rivals Industry Rankings.

Transfer Portal Strategy

Ohio State’s focus on talent extends to the transfer portal. The program has demonstrated the importance of the transfer portal, with additions such as quarterback Will Howard, who led Ohio State’s offense during its national championship run.

This offseason, Ohio State added transfers including Duke safety Terry Moore and Northwestern tight end Hunter Welching. The program hopes that the pair can soon be drafted into the NFL.

Future NFL Prospects

In USA Today’s latest mock projections for the 2026 NFL Draft, Ohio State is projected to have four players selected within the first 10 picks: linebacker Arvell Reese, safety Caleb Downs, linebacker Sonny Styles and wide receiver Carnell Tate.

Day is currently focused on building a cohesive unit from the talent at his disposal. He noted the importance of building relationships, stating, ‘This isn’t just a bunch of guys coming in off the street that we don’t know.’

Day acknowledged the mix of experienced and new players within the team. He said, ‘There’s guys in that group right there that have scars here, that have had success here, and there’s a lot of guys that haven’t played one snap here yet. All that comes in, into play this season.’
