The final week before the 2026 All-Star break has now officially arrived. Teams across the league are still actively jockeying for playoff position. Earning momentum heading into this break could achieve a great deal for these clubs. This potential momentum is important not only for their placement in the standings, but also for what each club may decide to do when the Trade Deadline arrives. That crucial deadline is now less than one month’s time away. Five key series have been identified for fans to watch for the week of July 6.
AL East Showdown: Rays and Yankees Clash
The Tampa Bay Rays have demonstrated a strong record against the New York Yankees so far this year. The Rays have taken four of five games against their rivals, a run which includes a comprehensive three-game sweep recorded back in April. Despite Tampa Bay’s strong performance, all five of these contests have been closely fought, with each game decided by just one or two runs.
The storyline surrounding this series is particularly compelling. The Yankees were positioned just 1 1/2 games back of the Rays’ lead in the AL East when their superstar, Aaron Judge, went on the IL on June 5. Judge’s injury looks likely to keep him out until at least August. One month later, the ‘Bronx Bombers’ find themselves four games back of the division leaders. They are also losers of nine of their last 10 games, with their offense currently sputtering. The Rays, meanwhile, continue to chug along effectively, having secured victories in eight of their last 10 outings. This particular series could go a long way to determining who ultimately secures the 2026 divisional crown. These fierce rivals will not square off again until the second-to-last series of the season.
Fans should especially keep an eye on Junior Caminero. The slugging third baseman, who celebrated his 23rd birthday on Sunday, has been on a heater, to say the least. He has smashed 11 home runs in his past 12 games. Caminero became the first player to reach that impressive mark since Kyle Schwarber achieved it in 2021. Interestingly, Caminero has yet to hit a homer against the Yankees this season. Perhaps that could change during this week’s pivotal series.
NL Central Battle: Brewers Face Cardinals
The head-to-head record between the Milwaukee Brewers and the St. Louis Cardinals began with a split of two games at Busch Stadium in early May. Subsequently, the Brewers swept all three matchups at home from May 25-27. Milwaukee notably needed an eighth-inning rally to secure the final game of that sweep. A Tuesday doubleheader is scheduled, which will make this a five-game set between the two sides.
In the broader NL Central storyline, the Cardinals took two of three games from the Cubs at Wrigley Field this past weekend. This outcome allowed them to creep closer to the top of the division. The Brewers currently hold a steady lead in first place. However, they were dealt another blow this weekend when veteran starter Brandon Woodruff hit the IL once again. The upstart Cardinals could well prove their mettle with a strong showing during this week’s contests.
Attention will be on the Brewers’ young starting pitchers. Jacob Misiorowski and Kyle Harrison are both scheduled to toe the rubber for the Crew this week. Both phenoms are coming off a rare poor performance. Misiorowski, known for his fire-breathing fastball, allowed five runs in five innings during his last outing, with one of those runs being earned. He also conceded two home runs, though he did still manage to strike out 10 batters. On the other hand, Harrison lasted just 2 2/3 innings on Friday, allowing three runs. The key question for Milwaukee is whether these young pitchers can bounce back, or if the ‘Redbirds’ will manage to capitalise on their recent struggles.
Interleague Encounter: Marlins and Mariners
This week will feature the first and only Interleague meeting between the Miami Marlins and the Seattle Mariners in 2026. The Mariners previously took two of three games against the Marlins at T-Mobile Park in 2025.
The Marlins set a historic mark during June, achieving an impressive 20-6 record. They have also shown no signs of slowing down in July. This included huge offensive showings that led to a sweep of the Athletics over the weekend. The Mariners, with their star player Julio Rodríg
