Mikael Granlund’s hat trick, completed with just one second left in overtime on the power play, gave the Anaheim Ducks a 3-2 win over the Calgary Flames on Thursday night.
Granlund’s Scoring Streak Lifts the Ducks
Granlund’s performance has extended his goal streak to four games, with seven goals scored during that span. His season total now stands at 19. The Anaheim Ducks have now won four games in a row.
The Ducks, who lead the Pacific Division, have built a five-point lead over the Edmonton Oilers and a six-point lead over the Vegas Golden Knights.
Flames Extend Point Streak Despite Loss
Rookie Matvei Gridin and Blake Coleman scored for Calgary. Calgary extended its point streak to five games (4-0-1). Gridin has a four-game point streak (one goal, three assists).
Devin Cooley made 30 saves but took the loss, falling to 9-10-4. Ville Husso made 23 saves, improving to 9-7-1.
Contentious Start to the Game
The game began poorly for the Flames. Pavel Mintyukov’s turnover led to a 3-on-0 breakaway for Calgary in the opening minute, but Gridin, Morgan Frost, and Matt Coronato failed to get a shot on goal due to over-passing.
Shortly after, Yegor Sharangovich appeared to give Calgary the lead, but the goal was overturned after Anaheim challenged for offside. It was the fifth goal the Flames have had disallowed by video review during their homestand.
Calgary eventually took the lead 1:06 into the second period when Coleman redirected Joel Farabee’s pass inside the post. Granlund tied the game with an unassisted goal two minutes later.
Ducks Hit by Injury Concerns
The Ducks suffered injuries to two defencemen. Radko Gudas left the game late in the second period with a lower-body injury. Mintyukov was also injured when he took a shot from Olli Maatta high in his chest in the third.
The Ducks will visit the Edmonton Oilers on Saturday. The Flames will host the Vancouver Canucks on Saturday.
