Rain marked the first day of the Miami Open, but it did not stop a large number of fans from attending the event.
Underdogs and Big Names Headline Miami Open
The Miami Open is set to feature several underdogs, alongside big names such as Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner. Novak Djokovic has withdrawn from the tournament due to a right shoulder injury. Tournament officials made the announcement on Sunday.
One first-time open participant, Sabrina Brutal, said she was most looking forward to any underdog.
Fans Acclimatise Despite Weather
While the stars won’t be in court for a few days, Sunday allowed fans to get acclimated to the event. One tennis fan, Felix Diaz, said he had heard a lot of great things about the event and how it brings people together. He added that he wanted to experience it himself.
While rain didn’t allow much tennis to be played on day one, memories and exposure to the game were a big part of it.
Local Residents Discover the Open
Day one of the Miami Open is free to the public. This allows fans to learn about the sport and see what the open has to offer. Some fans, like Belyndria Marcelus and her friends, discovered the event through social media. Marcelus said she saw it was free on TikTok and decided to attend.
Toni Jean, a Miami Gardens resident, said she didn’t even know the event was there, despite living five minutes away. She thought they were there for the vibes and the good food.
The fun atmosphere has them ready to come back for more days.
Marcelus said she wants to see a tennis match when she comes back.
