Mets Face Cardinals on First Road Trip of the Season

The Mets are set to carry their momentum onto the road as they face the Cardinals. They are coming off a series victory to open the season. In 2025, New York won four of six against St. Louis, which included a sweep at Citi Field in April. They won their first game at Busch Stadium in May, but were swept in a doubleheader two days later.

Opening Day Successes and Struggles

The Mets began the year by winning two out of three against the Pirates. Opening Day featured a host of new faces, all of whom contributed in some way to an 11-7 victory over Pittsburgh. Every Met recorded a hit except Bo Bichette. However, he did drive in the first run of the season on a sac fly. Francisco Lindor did not drive in a run, but scored three. Carson Benge homered for his first major league hit and RBI after striking out in his first two at-bats. He also stole a base later in the game. Freddy Peralta earned a win in his first start as a Met, although he didn’t look as sharp as usual. The Mets scored five runs in the first, chasing Paul Skenes after 2/3 of an inning.

Inconsistent Offence in Games Two and Three

The other two games against the Pirates were more uneven. The Mets won 4-2 on Saturday in walk-off fashion but lost 4-3 on Sunday in extra innings. The offence went 11-for-34 on Thursday and 5-for-15 with runners in scoring position. However, they were less impressive in the colder temperatures of the next two games. The lineup, which changed each game, went 6-for-35 on Saturday and 9-for-37 on Sunday. In Saturday’s win, they went 3-for-14 while leaving nine on base. They followed that up by going 2-for-10 with eight left on base in Sunday’s defeat.

Saturday’s game was scoreless into the ninth inning. After the teams traded runs in the tenth, the Pirates took the lead before Luis Robert Jr. hit a three-run, walk-off home run. Sunday’s game went into extras tied at two, and the Pirates scored two runs. Juan Soto drove in a run earlier in the game and then hit a gapper that scored the extra runner. Lindor, who walked in the inning, was thrown out at home.

Newcomers’ Mixed Performances

Opening weekend was a mixed bag for the new players. Robert was a standout, including his ten-pitch at-bat against Skenes, his walk-off home run, and his two hits on Sunday. He looked to have the star power to handle the New York spotlight. Bichette, on the other hand, recorded just one hit and the sac fly. He struck out eight times in 14 official at-bats. The defense was also a mixed bag, as both Bichette and Jorge Polanco, manning new positions, made some nice plays and also messed up some.

The Mets will look to continue their momentum as they face the Cardinals.
