Mason Greenwood: Marseille Told He ‘Has to Leave’

Mason Greenwood has been told he “has to leave” Marseille this summer, a situation that could have implications for Manchester United. Since joining from Manchester United, Greenwood has become a key player for Marseille.

Marseille Consider Greenwood Sale

Marseille may be forced to sell Greenwood because he has “grown bigger than the club.” He joined Marseille for £26.7 million in 2024. This season, Greenwood has scored 25 goals and provided 10 assists across all competitions for Marseille, improving on his tally of 22 goals in 2024/25.

Despite Greenwood’s performances, Marseille are struggling in Ligue 1. They sit in sixth place, four points adrift of the Champions League positions. The team have recorded just one win in their last five games, drawing 1-1 with Nice in their last outing.

Former Marseille full-back Eric Di Meco believes a transfer is likely. Speaking on RMC’s Super Moscato show, Di Meco said: “I think the story will resolve itself naturally to the benefit of both parties. I believe it will all end with a transfer in which OM recoups its investment, the most valuable in the club.

“The guy is bigger than the club; he has to leave. It’s the best thing for both sides.”

United Could Benefit From Sell-On Clause

Manchester United inserted a sell-on clause of around 50% in the deal that took Greenwood to Marseille. This means they will benefit from any future sale. The exact percentage is not clear, but it could be based on the full fee or the profit made.

If Marseille sell Greenwood, United could potentially receive as much as £18.5 million.

Juventus Interested in Greenwood

Juventus are reportedly interested in the forward. La Gazzetta dello Sport reported that Juve are ready to test Marseille’s resolve. Marseille have already placed a minimum price tag of €43million (£37m) on Greenwood.

Marseille’s final league position could influence their decision. They are back in action on Saturday when they travel to take on Nantes. They then finish their campaign with a trip to Le Harve on Sunday, 10 May, and what could be a crucial home game against fifth-place Rennes on Sunday, 17 May.
