Man City Game Sees VAR Controversy Amidst Premier League Action

Manchester City were involved in a moment of VAR controversy during their match. The referee initially waved away penalty appeals after Erling Haaland went down. VAR then had a look at the incident.

Haaland Penalty Shout Dismissed After VAR Review

Manchester City wanted a penalty as Erling Haaland rounded Matz Sels and went down. The referee didn’t give it, leading to a VAR review. Ultimately, VAR determined there was no penalty after the check, despite a touch from Matz Sels on Erling Haaland seemingly occurring. Haaland also avoided a booking for diving after VAR cleared the check. Furthermore, Sels was not booked for asking Haaland to be shown a yellow card.

Newcastle’s Penalty Drama

Newcastle were awarded a penalty after Anthony Gordon cut into the box and was caught by Bruno Fernandes’ knee. The referee immediately pointed to the spot. Gordon then scored from the penalty spot, thumping the ball down the middle past Senne Lammens. Paul Robinson, a former Leeds goalkeeper, commented on the penalty decision, saying Gordon did really well to instigate the contact. He added you could immediately see it was a penalty, praising the superb play from Gordon. Anthony Gordon has now won more Premier League penalties than any other player since the 2021-22 season, with 10 penalties won.

Newcastle Reduced to Ten Men

Newcastle faced further problems when Jacob Ramsey was sent off. Already on a booking, Ramsey went down inside the box after pushing the ball past Senne Lammens. He was then shown a second yellow card for diving. The home fans booed, as their side was reduced to 10 men.

Other Premier League Action

Elsewhere in the Premier League, Arsenal took the lead, and Chelsea were in front at Villa. Unai Emery made a triple substitution, with Ross Barkley, Jadon Sancho and Alysson Edward replacing Douglas Luiz, Emiliano Buendia and Leon Bailey. Fulham substitute Rodrigo Muniz attempted to level the score for his side, but his header from a cross went too high. Leandro Trossard also missed a chance, slicing a shot horribly after the ball was set across the box for him.

Elliot Anderson scored a wonderful goal. The England midfielder played a one-two 25 yards from goal, and curled a first-time strike into the bottom corner. Matheus Cunha strode into the area.
