Manchester City have moved to the top of the Premier League. Their 1-0 victory over Burnley saw them leapfrog Arsenal, while confirming Burnley’s relegation.
City Overtake Arsenal After Eight Months
The win against Burnley marked the first time in eight months that Manchester City have topped the Premier League. Fans chanted “we are top of the league” just five minutes into the game at Turf Moor.
Arsenal had previously held the top spot. They saw a nine-point lead evaporate in the past 11 days.
Mikel Arteta’s side could have moved twelve points clear on 11 April, but suffered a home defeat by Bournemouth. City then took advantage with three straight wins, including a victory over Arsenal.
City’s Missed Opportunities
Despite the victory, questions remain. Will City rue being unable to find a more clinical edge against a team relegated to the Championship?
With each goal potentially proving crucial in a tense title race, City may see a victory with a solitary Erling Haaland goal as a missed opportunity to boost their goal difference.
Guardiola said they missed a lot of chances. He felt that scoring a second goal would have allowed his team to be more relaxed.
Gary Neville noted that Arsenal’s players, coaches and fans will be wondering if Manchester City will play with the same intensity against better teams. He suggested that City could still slip up. Neville also highlighted the importance of goal difference in the title run-in, saying that City missed an ideal opportunity to improve it.
The Title Race Tightens
The title race is incredibly tight. Should City and Arsenal win all their remaining five games, they will both end on 85 points.
Goal difference or goals scored could be the deciding factor. Both teams have played the same number of games (33), have the same number of points (70) and their results are identical. They have each won 21, drawn seven and lost five of their matches.
The only factor separating the two sides is the number of goals scored. City have netted 66 to Arsenal’s 63.
City’s victory also confirmed Burnley’s relegation. They now face the challenge of trying to avoid a yo-yo effect between the divisions.
