Chicago Stars forward Mallory Swanson has taken a significant step toward her return to the pitch. The Stars activated Swanson from maternity leave, making her available for Saturday’s road game against the North Carolina Courage.
Swanson’s husband, Chicago Cubs shortstop Dansby Swanson, has expressed his admiration for her journey back. He noted her dedication, especially now as a mother.
Swanson’s Return From Maternity Leave
Mallory Swanson returned to training with the Stars on May 1. While she wasn’t in the starting lineup for the game against the North Carolina Courage, she was available off the bench. Swanson has been out of action for 18 months, since November 3, 2024.
Dansby Swanson told the Tribune, “Women are incredible. It’s just been the most incredible, blessed journey that one could ever really fathom.” He added, “To have been alongside with her and obviously going into a new chapter of our life and being parents and having a beautiful baby girl — women are incredible.”
Dansby Swanson’s Admiration
Dansby Swanson is in awe of his wife’s dedication. “You see all the work that she puts in and how much more it means now, and just with her being a mom,” Dansby said.
He also reflected on their daughter, Josie: “And for Josie to be able to be on the same journey and, I know she won’t remember any of it, but being able to recap that with her down the line and say your mom did this is pretty cool.”
Stars’ Need for Swanson’s Scoring
The Stars could benefit from Mallory Swanson’s scoring ability. In 2024, she led the team with 11 goal contributions, consisting of seven goals and four assists.
Without Swanson last season, the Stars finished in last place with a record of 3-12-11. They averaged 1.23 goals per game. This season, they have a 2-7-0 start and have scored only four goals.
Mallory Swanson scored the winning goal in the gold-medal match at the 2024 Paris Olympics with Team USA.
