Madison Keys Withdraws from Madrid Open Due to Illness

Madison Keys has withdrawn from the 2026 Mutua Madrid Open, citing illness. The World No. 17 joins Amanda Anisimova and Ekaterina Alexandrova as seeded players to withdraw from the event.

Anastasia Potapova will replace Keys. She will now face Zhang Shuai in the second round at La Caja Mágica.

Keys’ Clay Court Season Delayed

Keys began her clay-court season in Charleston, reaching the semifinals. Her red-clay debut this season will now be delayed until the Internazionali BNL d’Italia in Rome, where she is next scheduled to compete in May.

In Madrid, she reached the quarterfinals in 2025 and semifinals in 2024. These were her two top finishes at the event.

Other Withdrawals From The Madrid Open

Keys becomes the third seeded player to pull out of the event. Amanda Anisimova and Ekaterina Alexandrova also withdrew due to injury.

Keys’ semifinal run in Charleston was her best so far in 2026. There, she earned her highest-ranked win of the season against Belinda Bencic.

Prior to the main draw’s start, Sonay Kartal withdrew. She will miss the entire clay-court swing due to a back injury.

  • Maya Joint withdrew due to a back injury.
  • Emma Navarro withdrew due to illness.

Emma Raducanu and Marketa Vondrousouva also pulled out prior to the event.

Keys’ Previous Performances This Season

Keys also had runs to the quarterfinals in Brisbane and Adelaide. She also reached the fourth round at the Australian Open.

She entered as the defending champion in both Adelaide and Melbourne.
