Macklin Celebrini: San Jose Sharks’ Rising Star Remembered

The hockey world first took notice of Macklin Celebrini during his time with the Chicago Steel. Now a San Jose Sharks player, Celebrini’s time in Chicago is being remembered.

Celebrini’s Dominance in the USHL

Mike Garman, the former general manager and head coach of the Chicago Steel, recruited Celebrini. Garman remembers Celebrini’s year with the Steel, where the then 16-year-old excelled in the USHL.

In the 2022-23 season, Celebrini scored 46 goals and 86 points in just 50 games. He was named both the USHL Player and Rookie of the Year. Garman noted that Celebrini played with a bum shoulder early in the season, requiring surgery after the season’s end.

“[He’s] incredibly tough,” Garman said.

Draft Prospect to San Jose Sharks Center

Celebrini’s performance with the Steel made him a favourite to be the No. 1 pick in the 2024 draft. The San Jose Sharks selected him in June 2024.

Garman, now the associate head coach at Notre Dame, shared stories about Celebrini. Celebrini reflected on his time with the Steel, saying, “So many great memories. I loved my time here.”

Future Contract Speculation

There is anticipation for Macklin Celebrini to wear the ‘C’. Some have suggested the Sharks should offer an eight-year contract. The expectation is that they will sign the same day.

One theory suggests staggering large contracts to avoid multiple deals expiring in the same year. A potential eight-year contract, around $15 million, has been speculated. It’s also been suggested that Macklin may prioritise a better team over maximising his contract value.

Looking ahead, some observers have suggested Celebrini might opt for a shorter contract to capitalise on a potentially larger deal later.
