LSU Women’s Basketball Set for NCAA Tournament First Round

LSU’s women’s basketball team is gearing up to host the First and Second Rounds of March Madness for the fifth consecutive season. As the No. 2 seed, the Tigers are preparing to face the No. 15 seed Jacksonville Dolphins on Friday night at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center.

The game is scheduled for 5 p.m. CT and will be broadcast on ESPN. LSU Sports Radio Network will also provide coverage of the game.

Rematch Against Jacksonville

LSU and Jacksonville have only met once before in women’s basketball. That game took place on December 30, 2023, during Coach Kim Mulkey’s tenure. The Tigers secured a 110-68 victory over the Dolphins inside the Maravich Center.

Mulkey will be coaching against Jacksonville’s current head coach, Special Jennings, whom she faced in Jennings’ first season with the Dolphins.

Tournament Seeding and Regional Details

LSU holds the fifth-overall seed in the NCAA Tournament and will compete in the Sacramento 2 Regional. The other top-four seeds in the region include No. 1 UCLA, No. 3 Duke, and No. 4 Minnesota.

Kim Mulkey is aiming for her 150th win as the coach of the Tigers. LSU is hosting Texas Tech and Villanova as the No. 7 and No. 10 seeds, respectively.

Mulkey’s Tournament History and LSU’s Legacy

Mulkey is in her fifth season at LSU, and under her guidance, the Tigers have consistently hosted NCAA Tournament games. This year marks the first time LSU has been a No. 2 seed since 2008.

That year, LSU reached their fifth-straight Final Four. It is the fourth time overall that LSU has earned a No. 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament.

Since their inaugural NCAA Tournament appearance in 1984, LSU has built a 56-29 record. The team’s achievements include one national championship (2023), six Final Fours, 11 Elite Eights, and 17 Sweet Sixteens. LSU has made three consecutive Elite Eight appearances since its national championship season, the most since the Tigers played in six straight Elite Eights that included five straight Final Fours (2003-2008).

Mulkey has been involved in the NCAA Tournament every season since becoming a coach in 1985, with two exceptions. As a head coach, Mulkey has a 66-19 record in the NCAAT.

Offensive Prowess

Through 32 games, LSU has averaged 94.5 points per game, which leads the nation. If maintained, this scoring average would surpass the SEC record set by Georgia in 1986. The Tigers have scored a total of 3,023 points through 32 games.

Statistical Dominance

LSU leads the country in three statistical categories:

  • Bench points per game (39.2)
  • Rebound margin (16.9)
  • Scoring offence (94.5)

Kim Mulkey is seeking her 150th win as a Tiger on Friday night.
