LIV Golf’s South Africa Event: A ‘Taste of the Ryder Cup’

Dean Burmester felt the LIV Golf event in South Africa offered him a unique experience. Gazing at the grandstand, he remarked to Jon Rahm that it was a ‘small taste of the Ryder Cup’.

Burmester acknowledged he will likely never play in a Ryder Cup. He also doubts he will feature in a Presidents Cup. But the LIV Golf tournament in his home country gave him something akin to that experience.

Burmester’s Celebrations and Fan Support

Burmester embraced his role as both a player and a figurehead during the week. He frequently gestured to the crowd and celebrated on the tee boxes. He wanted to show his appreciation for the support.

He said he had developed a tan from constantly removing his hat to acknowledge the fans. He said the fans were shouting down the fairways and on the greens. ‘The more noise they could make, the better,’ Burmester added.

LIV’s Template for Success

The LIV template for massive international events has again proved successful. This mirrors the success seen in Australia over recent years. Over 100,000 tickets were sold in Johannesburg.

A Festival Atmosphere

LIV Golf seemingly wanted to see if South Africa could party harder than Australia. Its events are designed to be more like festivals. The aim is to attract people with golf, musical acts, sunshine, and beer.

The template involves creating a different atmosphere, moving away from the traditionally quiet norms of golf. This approach requires significant investment. The difference is particularly noticeable if the golf is also of a high standard.

Burmester was unsure if he had ever experienced such large crowds following his group. Regardless, he appreciated the support.

‘Greatest Week of My Life’

Burmester described the week as the ‘greatest week of my life’. This was even after his team, the Southern Guards, finished in second place. His teammate Branden Grace narrowly missed a birdie putt. The putt would have forced a playoff for the team competition.

The course was rain-soaked. The crowd was also ‘liquified’. Perhaps it was best that the playoff did not happen.

LIV Golf’s visit to South Africa proved to be a memorable occasion. It left a lasting impression on players and fans alike.
