Nick Lodolo’s start against the Guardians was cut short after just 10 pitches due to a blister on his left index finger. The Cincinnati Reds are now evaluating the situation. This occurred during Lodolo’s final Cactus League tuneup before the team breaks camp in Arizona.
Lodolo’s Early Exit and Team Response
Lodolo appeared uncomfortable after throwing a 1-0 changeup to José Ramírez. This prompted a visit from a trainer and manager Terry Francona. Following a brief conversation, Lodolo left the game. Francona stated that the blister was popped and drained in the training room.
Francona acknowledged apprehension due to Lodolo’s history with blister issues. The team will monitor him over the next few days. Lodolo has previously been placed on the injured list due to blisters on his left index finger.
His early exit is not ideal for the Reds. The club will need to consider its rotation options if the blister issue delays his start to the season.
Rotation Configuration Considerations
The Reds initially planned to have six starting pitchers on their 26-man roster. These include Andrew Abbott, Lodolo, Brady Singer, Rhett Lowder, Chase Burns and Brandon Williamson. Lowder, Burns and Williamson were intended for a tandem situation, pitching every five days instead of out of the bullpen.
The Reds can adjust their rotation order as needed. There is also flexibility due to an off-day. Francona stated they would figure things out if they lose someone, as nobody will feel sorry for them.
Williamson is unlikely to move up in the rotation. He will stay back in Arizona to pitch on Wednesday, as the Reds want to maintain his routine following Tommy John surgery recovery.
Singer as a Potential Option
Singer is scheduled to make his first regular-season start on Sunday against Boston. He could potentially move up in the rotation, given he would be on normal rest. Singer is slated to start in the Reds’ exhibition game against the Brewers on Monday.
Singer experienced a blister on his right index finger during his start against the Rockies, but he caught it before it broke.
Lodolo is currently slated to start Saturday against the Red Sox in the second game of the regular season.
