A recent football derby between BSG Chemie Leipzig and Hallescher FC (HFC) was overshadowed by significant security concerns. Authorities feared potential violence, leading to a massive police presence and strict regulations.
Heavy Security Presence at High-Risk Derby
Around 1,000 police officers were deployed to manage the high-risk Regionalliga Nordost match between BSG Chemie Leipzig and Hallescher FC. The city of Leipzig issued a general order outlining the concrete danger to life and limb in the vicinity of Alfred-Kunze-Sportpark. Security officials feared that police officers could be actively attacked and that visitors and uninvolved individuals could be seriously injured.
Riot police units were tasked with separating the opposing fans. Water cannons, helicopters, and drones were also deployed at the football match. Authorities banned items previously discovered among troublemakers, including baseball bats, sand-filled gloves, wooden slats, poles, and irritant sprays. Protectors, padded clothing, protective vests, and various helmet-like head coverings were also prohibited.
Past Incidents Fuel Tensions
A prior arson attack on Hallescher FC’s U19 team bus was a contributing factor to the heightened tensions. The bus was set ablaze after a friendly match, leading to speculation among HFC fans that rival Chemie supporters were responsible, possibly as retaliation for incidents during a previous match in September 2025.
During that earlier game, HFC fans stormed the pitch and clashed with Leipzig players. The North-East German Football Association (NOFV) fined HFC €32,150 and issued a suspended block closure. Chemie received a fine of approximately €21,700.
Hallescher FC Secures Victory Amidst the Chaos
Despite the off-field concerns, Hallescher FC won the derby against BSG Chemie Leipzig 2-0. Kilian Zaruba scored his first goal of the season and provided an assist.
Zaruba’s performance stood out in the victory. The team has now won their third game of the year without conceding a goal.
Leipzig’s public order officer, Heiko Rosenthal, stated that communicative measures have little effect on the relevant clientele. The order also noted that security disturbances increase with increasing alcohol consumption, and the already low level of cooperation decreases.
Authorities anticipated repeated attacks on emergency service personnel. Frank Gurke was in charge of separating the opposing fan groups.
Elsewhere, in the A-Junioren Landesliga Staffel IV, 1. FC Zeitz defeated TSG Wörmlitz-Böllberg 14-1. NSG SSC/RW Weißenfels secured a 5-3 victory against Haldensleber SC in the A-Junioren Verbandsliga. VfB 1906 Sangerhausen defeated SV Fortuna Magdeburg 7-1.
