Former West Brom striker Lee Hughes has revealed that Wolves once plotted a surprise move to sign him. The revelation comes nearly 25 years after the event, with Hughes stating that then-Wolves boss Dave Jones contacted him regarding a potential transfer.
Hughes’ Account of Wolves’ Transfer Approach
Hughes, speaking on TikTok, said that Jones contacted him after Coventry City triggered his £5 million release clause. Hughes had been transfer listed after rejecting a contract offer from West Brom. According to Hughes, Jones said that Wolves would match Coventry’s offer and increase his wages.
Hughes revealed he immediately rejected the move to Wolves due to his family’s roots in Smethwick. He recounted Jones’ response, where the then-Wolves manager highlighted the club’s stature.
Background to the Potential Transfer
Hughes’ revelation sheds light on a potentially controversial transfer that never materialised. At the time, West Brom and Wolves were rivals in the First Division (now the Championship). The rivalry between the two clubs is fierce, making direct transfers between them rare.
Hughes was a key player for West Brom at the time. In the 2000-01 season, he scored 23 goals, helping the Baggies reach the play-offs. Ultimately, West Brom were defeated in the semi-final stage by Bolton Wanderers.
Rivalry Between West Brom and Wolves
The relationship between West Brom and Wolves is known to be one of the most bitter rivalries in English football. The last time they played each other in the FA Cup in January 2024 saw significant spectator violence overshadow Wolves’ 2-0 win. Direct transfers between the clubs are uncommon, with Steve Bull being a rare exception.
Both clubs will compete in the Championship next season.
Ultimately, Hughes moved to Coventry City. He had arrived at The Hawthorns in 1997 from Kidderminster Harriers for £380,000.
