LeBron James has spoken about his first year with the Miami Heat, admitting he took on a ‘villain role’ and allowed the media to put him in a dark place.
James on Initial Heat Season Struggles
James said he didn’t leave his room for about two weeks after losing his first year with the Heat. He realised he had to start having fun again.
He was 25 years old at the time. It was the first time he had ever left his home, having stayed in his hometown of Akron during his first seven years with the Cleveland Cavaliers.
The Decision and Subsequent Backlash
When he made the announcement he was going to Miami, James’s mindset was to do something different. He wanted to treat it like a college announcement.
The announcement also gave an opportunity to give money back to Boys and Girls Club. He thinks they raised $2.5 million, $3 million, something like that.
James stated he didn’t anticipate the hate and backlash that followed his decision. He allowed everybody to put him in a dark place.
Impact on Finals Performance
James believes that playing basketball and enjoying life in a dark place is not in his nature. He said he is like a big kid who loves having fun and wants the people around him to have fun and enjoy life.
He wore that black hat for a year. James thinks the reason he played the way he played in the Finals against Dallas in his first year in Miami is because he wasn’t himself.
“I took the villain role because I let the media… and I was young,” said James.
