The Los Angeles Lakers’ investment in LeBron James may be causing issues as they look to the future. The team has spent nearly half a billion dollars on LeBron since he joined in twenty eighteen. However, with the arrival of Luka Doni, questions are being raised about LeBron’s fit with the team’s long-term plans.
The Cost of Bringing LeBron to LA
The Lakers made a significant financial commitment to acquire LeBron James. The initial contract in twenty eighteen was a four-year deal worth one hundred and fifty-three million dollars. This was the biggest deal in Lakers history at the time.
LeBron was thirty-three, but LA paid him like he was twenty-five.
Since that initial contract, the Lakers have spent over three hundred million in extensions. His total career earnings amount to five hundred and eighty-one million dollars.
Building Around Luka Doni
The Lakers also had to keep spending to build a competitive team around LeBron. Anthony Davis came at the expense of young stars.
In February twenty twenty-five, Luka Doni arrived, signing a three-year, one hundred and sixty-five million dollar extension. Suddenly, the future looked bright again.
But LeBron and his fifty-two million dollar contract were still on the books.
Uncertain Future for LeBron
LeBron’s hefty contract could be a stumbling block. Until the Lakers renounce his rights, LeBron will likely be the first domino that will fall before the complete build around Luka.
The question remains: Is LeBron’s time in Los Angeles coming to an end?
