LA Galaxy will begin their CONCACAF Champions Cup quarterfinal series on the road against Toluca FC.
This presents a challenge, as road trips to Mexico have historically been difficult for MLS teams.
Galaxy’s MLS Form a Concern
The Galaxy are off to a slow start in MLS play. They currently sit in 12th place with a record of 1-3-2.
The team hoped to avoid this after last season’s disappointing performance, but now carry a four-game winless streak into the match against the back-to-back Liga MX champion.
Galaxy midfielder Edwin Cerrillo identified moments in the game that are hurting the team. He stated that the team knows where these moments are and where to maintain focus.
Vanney Seeks Marginal Gains
Galaxy coach Greg Vanney spoke about the team’s current state. He questions whether there is a lack of confidence or a frustration of not getting over the hump.
Vanney believes the team possesses a certain level of confidence, enabling them to dictate and move the game. He is focused on identifying the extra three to five percent needed to turn good performances into victories, emphasizing the importance of details and margins.
Toluca’s Home Advantage
Toluca, winners of both the Apertura and Clausura Tournaments last year in Liga MX, present a real challenge. In the Round of 16, Toluca lost its first leg to San Diego FC, 3-2, on the road, but won the second leg 4-0.
Vanney said that the team will approach the series like it’s four quarters, viewing it as the first leg of two.
Cerrillo noted the frustration within the team when they don’t score three to four goals, highlighting the intent to score consistently. He acknowledged that teams often sit back with compact defenses, requiring the team to find moments to break them down, maintaining focus to prevent turnovers from resulting in goals.
