Konnor Griffin, aged 19 years, 344 days, prepared for his big league debut for the Pittsburgh Pirates against the Baltimore Orioles. Griffin said he felt ready when stepping onto the field at PNC Park. The Pirates secured a 5-4 victory.
Griffin’s Impactful Debut
Griffin’s physical gifts were evident. He executed a tidy double play in the second inning. He also hit a 105 mph rope to center field in his first at-bat against Baltimore’s Kyle Bradish, scoring Ryan O’Hearn. The hit energised a sellout crowd.
Griffin also dashed from second to home on a ground ball to right field by teammate Jared Triolo. He successfully challenged a strike call in his third at-bat. He gathered a chopper, briefly bobbled it, and fired to first for an out to end the eighth inning.
Griffin called it “hands down one of the best days of my life.” The organisation hopes it marks the start of a long, successful run for the franchise.
Skenes Praises Griffin as a ‘Difference-Maker’
Pirates ace Paul Skenes, the reigning National League Cy Young winner, stated, “He’s a difference-maker. It was very apparent today.”
Griffin’s debut came just 628 days after Pittsburgh selected him with the ninth pick in the 2024 amateur draft. He is the first teenage position player to reach the majors since Juan Soto did it with the Washington Nationals in 2018. Griffin wore a No. 6 jersey and was penciled in the seventh spot in the lineup against the Orioles.
Honouring Mazeroski
Griffin became the youngest Pirates player to get a hit in his first game since Hall of Famer Bill Mazeroski did it July 7, 1956. The club honoured Mazeroski, who died in February at 89, by having “Maz” painted into the outfield grass behind second base. Griffin was scouted and signed by Mazeroski’s son Darren.
“Darren is the reason I’m here,” Griffin said. “He believed in me and took a chance on me. That’s pretty special right there, and I’m going to cherish that a long time.”
Griffin’s Rapid Ascent
- Griffin hit .438 in a handful of games for Triple-A Indianapolis.
- Griffin’s call-up came less than two weeks after he was one of the last cuts during spring training.
- During spring training, he mashed three home runs.
On the surface, it seems fast, but not for Griffin, who checked every box while sprinting through the Pirates’ system.
The warm spring afternoon had a decidedly early fall playoff-like vibe.
