Khachanov Faces Test as Defending Barcelona Semifinalist

Karen Khachanov is set to face a stern test at the ATP Barcelona Open, with the Russian feeling the pressure as a defending semifinalist.

The ATP Barcelona Open is a significant clay court event every season. The field is stacked with top ATP Tour talent.

Khachanov’s Form Under Scrutiny

Khachanov has particularly struggled with his form. At Carabelli’s most recent ATP 250 tournament in Morocco, he fell in the semifinals after winning just three games. Yet, he could be a stern test for Khachanov.

Carabelli tends to play his best tennis on clay courts. The Argentine is winless against Top 20 players. Khachanov has a solid B-game that could succeed against an underexperienced opponent.

De Minaur’s Barcelona Campaign

Alex de Minaur maintains a 8-5 record at the Barcelona event. The Aussie is yet to reach an ATP Tour final on clay courts.

De Minaur was upset in the quarterfinals of the ATP 1000 event in Monte Carlo last week, but he should be refreshed enough to take out Ofner. De Minaur only lost four games in his sole 2024 win over Ofner, though Ofner did recently string together a 12-match winning streak, hoisting ATP Challenger Tour trophies earlier in 2026. The Aussie is skilled on clay courts, but will have to start strong against a confident opponent.

Other Matches to Watch

Martinez and Sonego are also set to face off. Martinez won the pair’s only meeting in 2025, on clay courts in Monte Carlo. The Spaniard qualified for the main draw here, while Sonego is making his return to the court following an injury. Martinez has put together a lackluster 2-7 record at tour-level this season, suggesting it could be a toss up. Sonego’s rustiness might prove to be the difference here.

The ATP Barcelona Open features a stacked field of talent, promising competitive matches on the clay courts.
