Justin Devenny’s Penalty Wins Crystal Palace the Community Shield

Crystal Palace secured a trophy to start the campaign after a dramatic meeting with Liverpool back in August.

Palace Claim Community Shield Victory

The match, held under the Arch, saw the Reds take an early two-goal lead. Jean-Philippe Mateta halved the deficit before half-time with a penalty against the then Premier League champions. A late finish from Ismaïla Sarr sent the game to a penalty shootout.

Dean Henderson proved the hero, saving spot kicks from Alexis Mac Allister and Harvey Elliott.

Mo Salah also missed his penalty. Ebere Eze and Borna Sosa also failed to find the net for Palace.

Devenny Seals the Win

The shootout was tied at 2-2 with one kick remaining. Devenny stepped up and smashed a superb penalty-kick beyond Alisson and into the Liverpool net.

Devenny, who as a substitute had nearly won the match in the dying moments of normal time with an effort that went just past the post, was then given the chance to win the shield.

Palace claimed a second trophy in a matter of months to start the campaign with silverware.
