John Beaton’s decision to yellow card Emmanuel Fernandez has been slammed.
The incident occurred during Rangers’ second half collapse against Hearts, when Fernandez made a challenge on Claudio Braga.
Controversial Yellow Card for Fernandez
The incident involved the big centre half putting in a strong challenge on the Portuguese forward in a central area.
Commentary consensus suggested it was a fair challenge.
Fernandez made clear contact with the ball and there was no real follow through on the player.
Instead of setting Rangers off on the attack, Beaton blew for a foul, and took it one step further by flashing the yellow card.
Ferguson and Mulgrew React
Barry Ferguson couldn’t believe what he was seeing.
Speaking on the Go Radio Football Show, he said: “He has won the ball clearly there, Fernandez. I don’t know what John Beaton is seeing here. John Beaton, talk to me. Rangers are on the attack there.”
Charlie Mulgrew agreed, saying: “Unbelievable. And it’s mental. Honestly, that’s a tackle you would love your defender to make.
“That’s unreal. That’s mad. Rangers are on the attack and then it changes the whole momentum.”
Rangers’ Title Hopes Fading
The game also prompted Barry Ferguson to confess Rangers are out of the title race after the Hearts loss.
McCoist brands Rangers ‘mentally weak’ and raises key concern with team’s identity.
