Jay Williams Criticises OKC Thunder’s ‘Lack of Respect’ for Basketball

Jay Williams has voiced strong criticism of the Oklahoma City Thunder, suggesting a lack of respect for basketball due to perceived foul-baiting tactics.

Williams’s Criticism of the Thunder

Williams stated that he struggles to support the Thunder because of their style of play. A key issue for Williams is the frequency with which Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, the league’s MVP award winner, draws fouls. Williams said, “Every single time they shoot, SGA is landing in somebody’s region, he’s falling down and you’re just like, ‘how do I root for that?’” He contrasted this with the San Antonio Spurs, who he finds easier to support.

Williams elaborated on his concerns, saying, “As a fan of the game, I just want to see the game respected. There are times where I watch OKC play, I don’t feel like they respect the process of the game. It’s too much foul baiting. When you fall down 95% of every shot you take in the 4th quarter, and I’m glad the refs are not calling it, I get psychologically exhausted.”

Foul Baiting Concerns

The Thunder’s reliance on free throws is a point of contention. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander leads the postseason with 9.8 free-throw attempts per game among players with at least 10 games played. This has fuelled the perception that the team’s style involves excessive foul baiting.

Spurs Series Update

The Spurs and Thunder series is currently tied at one game apiece. The series now shifts to San Antonio. The Spurs will likely be without guard Dylan Harper, who suffered a hamstring injury.

With the series heading to San Antonio, it remains to be seen how the Thunder will adjust their approach amidst the criticism.
