The list of players not competing at the French Open is growing. The latest involves defending doubles champions Jasmine Paolini and Sara Errani.
Paolini Focuses on Singles
Paolini is the 13th seed in the singles draw. She is not playing doubles this year.
Errani is still participating in the tournament, pairing with Austrian teenager Lilli Tagger. There is an Italian connection to this pairing, as Tagger is coached by former Italian player Francesca Schiavone.
Silence Surrounds the Decision
The silence on this issue is confusing. No one in Paolini or Errani’s camps has provided any explanation for the change.
Paolini has been dealing with a foot injury. This injury forced the team to prematurely exit the Italian Open. Some speculate this is why she is not playing doubles.
There are also concerns that she may withdraw from singles if she is not healthy enough to play.
Errani’s Role as Coach
Errani is on Paolini’s team and acting as a tennis coach for her in singles. The two were seen together at Roland Garros going to practice. It does not appear as though the coaching relationship is in peril.
Pressure to Defend Points
Paolini has struggled to defend the points she earned in her massive 2024 season as the French Open and Wimbledon finalist and as last year’s Italian Open champion.
