Jannik Sinner has continued his impressive form by winning the Italian Open, further cementing his status in the tennis world.
With a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Casper Ruud in the Italian Open final, Sinner achieved a significant milestone. He became the second player, and the youngest at 24, to win all nine ATP Masters 1000 tournaments. Novak Djokovic, the only other player to achieve this, completed the set at age 31.
Sinner Extends Winning Streak
Sinner’s victory over Ruud marks his 34th consecutive win at ATP Masters 1000 events. His overall win streak in all competitions now stands at 29. While the match was closer than their previous encounter in Rome 12 months ago, where Sinner dominated with a 6-0, 6-1 victory, the outcome rarely felt uncertain.
Ruud initially broke Sinner’s serve to lead 2-0 in the opening set, but Sinner quickly regained control.
“It was not perfect tennis from both of us, but I’m really, really happy. Incredible last two-and-a-half months,” Sinner said.
Ruud’s Struggles Against Sinner’s Power
Ruud’s game has faced scrutiny since 2022, particularly after losing to Rafael Nadal in the French Open final and to Carlos Alcaraz at the U.S. Open. His game has been perceived as lacking aggressiveness. However, the reality is that opponents like Sinner can simply hit the ball with more power.
While Ruud’s serve and forehand posed challenges at times, his backhand was not as effective as Sinner’s, especially when hitting crosscourt. Ruud also hesitated to take shots down the line. This reluctance stemmed from the risk of exposing himself to Sinner’s powerful forehand.
Sinner secured the opening set by winning three points behind drop shots in the ninth game, breaking Ruud’s serve to lead 5-4. After breaking Ruud’s serve again at the start of the second set, the match seemed destined for a Sinner victory.
“What you’re doing this year is hard to describe in words,” Ruud acknowledged to Sinner during the trophy ceremony.
Sinner’s French Open Prospects
With an inside-out forehand that clipped the sideline, Sinner moved to 36-2 in 2026 and won his sixth consecutive ATP Masters 1000 title. He has solidified his position as a strong favourite for the French Open, which begins May 24.
