Wisconsin Badgers defensive coordinator Mike Tressel has highlighted the increased confidence of sophomore cornerback Jai’mier Scott, who believes that “it’s his time now”. Tressel noted that Scott’s belief in himself to compete has grown significantly.
Scott’s Development and Mindset
Tressel stated, “I think the biggest thing is he truly believes, ‘hey, it’s his time now.’ It’s his time to at the very least compete and, shoot, in his mind, why not me, right?” Tressel added that Scott should believe in himself because of his talent. Tressel also noted the difference between Scott now and last season: “I think that he was a pretty smart dude and had the length and could run and all that from last season too, but I don’t know if he quite believed it was his time and he should be the guy out there. And so that’s night and day.”
Competition in the Cornerback Room
Scott, who stands at 6’1 and weighs 192 pounds, will be competing for a spot in the two-deep this season. The Badgers have bolstered their cornerback depth through the transfer portal. Wisconsin added Javan Robinson, Cai Bates, Bryce West, and Eric Fletcher. Carsen Eloms and Donovan Dunmore have also joined as freshmen.
Returners and Newcomers
Along with Scott, Cairo Skanes and Jahmare Washington are the returning cornerbacks from the 2025 season. Skanes was in the two-deep as a true freshman at the field corner spot. Scott was also in the two-deep mix as a freshman, even if the snaps weren’t there.
Looking Ahead to Spring Ball
The competition at cornerback is expected to be intense throughout spring ball. With limited experienced returners, the battle for positions should be one of the best this offseason.
