Andoni Iraola has expressed his desire to secure European football for Bournemouth as the ‘best way’ to conclude his tenure. The Bournemouth manager is set to depart in the summer upon the expiration of his contract after three seasons with the club.
Potential European Qualification for Cherries
Iraola’s side currently occupies sixth position in the Premier League, a spot that could potentially lead to Europa League qualification. They are four points away from a Champions League place. There remains a possibility of Conference League qualification. Sixth position could even be enough for Champions League qualification should Aston Villa win the Europa League final against Freiburg and finish fifth.
“It would be the best way to finish these amazing three seasons,” Iraola said.
Iraola added, “Especially this year, it has been really challenging for me as a coach because we’ve changed the team a lot and we’ve changed, not completely our style, but it’s a different type of football comparing to last season.”
Bournemouth’s Unbeaten Run and Remaining Fixtures
Bournemouth are currently enjoying a 16-match unbeaten run in the top flight, which is the longest of any side in the competition this season. Their last defeat was against Arsenal on 3 January.
The Cherries have two games remaining this season, starting with a home fixture against Manchester City on Tuesday. They then travel to face Nottingham Forest on Sunday.
Just one point is required from their last two games to secure European football.
Iraola’s Perspective on Securing European Football
Iraola acknowledged the fine margin between being close to securing European football and actually achieving it. “We are really close, but there is a big difference between being really close and getting it and grabbing it,” added Iraola.
Bournemouth have never played in European competition in their 127-year history.
Iraola’s side have not been defeated since selling then-top scorer Antoine Semenyo to Manchester City in the January transfer window with the forward returning to the Vitality Stadium on Tuesday.
Securing European football would be a historic achievement for Bournemouth and a fitting end to Iraola’s challenging but ultimately successful season.
