Barcelona president Joan Laporta has revealed that Hansi Flick is set to extend his contract with the club until 2028. Laporta indicated that the official announcement is expected ‘soon’. Flick’s current deal expires in 2027, but both parties are keen on prolonging his stay.
Laporta’s Desire for Stability
Laporta, who was recently re-elected as Barcelona president until 2031, expressed his desire for Flick to remain at the club for the duration of his mandate. He believes that having Flick as coach for an extended period would demonstrate stability and be a sign of success. Laporta also noted Flick’s youthfulness, energy, and happiness in the city as factors supporting a long-term partnership.
Flick’s Commitment to Barcelona
Speaking ahead of Barcelona’s Champions League tie with Newcastle United, Flick confirmed that he will not take on another role after his time at Barcelona. He stated that it’s not the right moment to talk about his contract situation. He added that he is happy at Barcelona and it will be his last club.
Focus on the Champions League
Flick emphasised the importance of the upcoming match against Newcastle United. He stressed the need for his team to perform perfectly. Flick acknowledged Newcastle’s strengths, highlighting their high pressing, man-to-man marking, physicality, and fast players in transition.
Flick has already secured four trophies since taking over, including LaLiga, the Copa del Rey, and two Spanish Supercopas. However, the Champions League title has so far eluded him. Barcelona reached the semifinal last year, losing to Inter Milan, but Flick believes they can go one step further this year. He believes that Barcelona are able to win this Champions League.
Flick stated that his team needs to improve. He said it is important to have everyone available and at their best level.
