Goiás and Cruzeiro will play each other this Wednesday in the first leg of the fifth phase of the Copa do Brasil. The match will take place at the Serra Dourada Stadium in Goiânia. The game also marks the return of large matches to the main stage of Goian football, which has not regularly hosted games for years.
The match is scheduled for 19:00 and will be broadcast on Sportv and Premiere.
Serra Dourada’s Revival
The match gains a special character because of the venue. Serra Dourada, opened in 1975, returns to use after almost a year without hosting games. Goiás has been playing most of its games at the Serrinha stadium, while the Serra has gone long periods without relevant matches, especially since 2019.
The stadium did host some games in the first half of last year. The last Goiás match at the Serra was on 23 April last year, when they drew 1-1 with Paysandu in the Copa Verde final. The last time the stadium hosted a game was on 22 May, when Vila Nova were defeated by Cruzeiro 3-0 in the Copa do Brasil.
Anticipated Attendance and Stadium Upgrade
The choice of the larger stadium to face Cruzeiro restores the club’s relationship with the “Giant of the Central-West”. It also meets the expectation of a higher attendance at key games. The capacity of over 40,000 fans and the history of great matches make the location a differential for this evening’s match.
The reopening, however, is only for a limited time. The Serra Dourada should remain available only until the end of the first half of 2026, before undergoing a major structural renovation. The project includes a complete modernisation of the complex, with interventions that could last about two years.
Goiás Seeks Home Advantage
On the pitch, Goiás will try to take advantage of the home factor to gain an advantage against Cruzeiro in a match that promises balance. Off the pitch, the match also represents a reunion of the Goian fans with a stadium that has marked generations. For now, it once again becomes the stage for a decisive night.
