Gabriela Jaquez Makes WNBA History as First Mexicoestadounidense

Gabriela Jaquez has made history as the first Mexicoestadounidense selected in the first round of a WNBA draft. The talented guard guided the UCLA Bruins to a national championship this year.

Jaquez Drafted by Chicago Sky

The Chicago Sky selected Jaquez with the fifth pick in the draft. This surprised many experts, who had predicted she would be picked later in the first round.

Jaquez follows in the footsteps of her older brother, Jaime Jaquez Jr., who also made history in the NBA. Jaime Jaquez Jr. was selected 18th by the Miami Heat in the 2023 NBA draft, making him the first Mexicoestadounidense drafted in the first round of an NBA draft.

Gabriela and Jaime will become the first siblings of Mexican heritage to play in both the NBA and WNBA simultaneously.

Other Draft Highlights

Azzi Fudd, the star guard from the UConn Huskies, was the first pick in the draft by the Dallas Wings. She is the seventh UConn player to be the number one pick.

Fudd will join Paige Bueckers in Dallas, under the leadership of Cuban-American coach Jose Fernandez.

The Minnesota Lynx selected Olivia Miles from TCU second. The Seattle Storm then drafted Awa Fam Thiam from Spain, making the 19-year-old the highest-drafted Spanish player in WNBA history.

More history was made in this draft.
