The race for Kia Rookie of the Year is heating up as the season nears its end. Kon Knueppel of the Charlotte Hornets and Cooper Flagg of the Dallas Mavericks are the leading contenders. The debate over who is more deserving is intensifying.
Knueppel’s Case for Rookie of the Year
Kon Knueppel continues to lead the NBA in 3-pointers made. He also remains at the top of the Kia Rookie Ladder. Some NBA figures have voiced their support for Knueppel. On Amazon Prime, John Wall, Steve Nash, and Blake Griffin all argued on his behalf.
Wall stated that Knueppel has exceeded expectations. According to Wall, Knueppel should be the clear-cut Rookie of the Year.
Flagg’s Challenge and Historical Comparisons
Many don’t agree with Wall’s assessment. Iman Shumpert compared the Flagg-Knueppel battle to the 2004 race between LeBron James and Carmelo Anthony. Shumpert pointed out that Knueppel is helping his team chase a playoff spot. This is similar to what Anthony did for Denver.
Flagg’s team is lottery-bound, like James’ Cavs during his rookie season. Shumpert acknowledged the similarities in their numbers. He also noted Knueppel’s advantageous position in a team striving for immediate wins. Shumpert highlighted that James received the award despite Anthony’s superior scoring, rebounding, and shooting statistics, as well as the Nuggets’ better record.
Flagg’s Recent Performance
Flagg missed eight games due to a left foot sprain, including time through the All-Star break. He has since returned for eight games, averaging 18.9 points, 7.0 rebounds, 6.6 assists, and 2.2 steals+blocks per game. Both the Hornets and the Mavericks have 13 games remaining as of Wednesday, March 17. This provides ample time for either player to sway voters.
