England Squad Update: Shaw Included in Tuchel’s Split Camp

Thomas Tuchel will split the England camp into two. A squad of 19 players will effectively vie for selection through to the second part of the camp, when 11 senior players will join.

Tuchel’s Approach to Squad Selection

Tuchel said that clarity is needed around every position. He stated that it is unlikely that he will bring three, four or five players for one position, as that would confuse everyone. According to Tuchel, the choice between world-class players in the number 10 position means that a tough call will have to be made at some point. The competition is on, but Tuchel said it will be shared.

Players Returning from Injury

Jude Bellingham’s fitness was discussed, and Tuchel addressed his decision to call up the midfielder, despite him not playing for Real Madrid since 1 February. Tuchel said that he wanted Bellingham in camp, Bellingham wanted to be in camp and Real Madrid were happy. Team training will be provided for him over the international break. Tuchel said that all the boxes are ticked.

Tuchel added that they will continue his integration into team training and not take any risk. He also noted that a muscle injury is new for him and that the best case is that he gets some minutes against Japan.

Tomori’s Recall and Dowman’s Absence

Fikayo Tomori has been recalled. Tuchel said that he has had many phone calls with him over the past year and it has always been close. This is the last chance before the World Cup to see him on the pitch. Tuchel stated he is very impressed with his ability to defend, adding that he is fast and aggressive and is excited to come after a long wait.

Tuchel also discussed his decision not to call up Arsenal teenager Max Dowman. He said that Dowman is an outstanding talent and everyone he speaks to is full of compliments about him, but the reality is he competes for minutes at Arsenal and is not a regular starter. Tuchel believes he is in the best environment possible in a stable and competitive club, learning from the very best. He is in a good spot to fight for minutes at Arsenal and there is always a chance, but the key with young players is to keep their momentum going as they have a level of fearlessness. Tuchel does not see a need to call him up now and increase the pressure.

Goalkeeping and the World Cup

Jason Steele is potentially going to the World Cup as a training goalkeeper. Tuchel stated that he has been identified as a very good candidate for this role and they wanted to try it in March.

Tuchel will have to submit a squad of 35 players for the 2026 World Cup on 30 May, which will be whittled down to a final squad of 26 players before the first game.
