Dusty Baker is managing Nicaragua in the World Baseball Classic at the age of 76.
He is also set to be recognised as a member of the Cactus League Hall of Fame on March 14, but he hopes his team’s performance in the World Baseball Classic will prevent him from attending the ceremony.
Baker’s Commitment to Nicaragua
Baker turned down an opportunity to manage in the WBC in 2023. He chose to focus on the Houston Astros’ quest to win back-to-back World Series titles. After the Astros lost Game 7 of the AL Championship Series in 2023, Baker retired shortly afterwards.
Baker is currently working as an advisor with the San Francisco Giants, a team he previously played for and managed. When Nicaragua approached him about managing their team, he accepted the offer.
Players Admire Baker’s Leadership
Nicaragua infielder Mark Vientos, who also plays for the New York Mets, spoke highly of Baker. Vientos stated that he listens intently to everything Baker says. He added that he grew up watching Baker coach and seeing highlights of him play, and that he is honoured to be around him and hear his stories and wisdom.
Baker Enjoys Working with Young People
Baker mentioned that being around young people keeps him young. He also mentioned his 27-year-old son and grandsons. He enjoys being in uniform and playing the game.
Baker will eventually return to Arizona, where the Giants have spring training. His son Darren is also in Arizona with the Chicago White Sox.
