Dodgers’ Pitching Woes Continue: Roster Changes and Injury Updates

The Dodgers are once again facing a barrage of pitching injuries, forcing them to make numerous roster adjustments.

History is repeating itself as key pitchers like Tyler Glasnow and Blake Snell are out, with Jack Dreyer the latest to land on the injured list (IL).

Dreyer’s Injury and Subsequent Roster Moves

Dreyer was placed on the IL on Sunday due to shoulder discomfort. X-rays revealed inflammation, but no structural damage. The Dodgers are hopeful his stint on the IL will be brief.

In response, Paul Gervase was recalled. Charlie Barnes, who had just been brought up two days prior, was optioned. Chayce McDermott was recalled, only to be sent back to Triple-A a day later when Jonathan Hernández was signed as a free agent. Ben Casparius was transferred to the 60-day IL with right shoulder inflammation.

The Dodgers’ medical updates have been called untrustworthy, as evidenced by Glasnow’s situation. Despite initial optimism and Glasnow’s own description of his issue as “Tall Guy Back,” he ended up on the IL and has since been shut down after experiencing more back spasms.

Dodgers’ History with Pitching Injuries

The Dodgers have become accustomed to dealing with pitching injuries. They used 40 pitchers in both of the past two seasons. Both starters and relievers alike have been hit with injuries.

The Dodgers are adept at stashing arms, a strategy born out of necessity due to their pitching staff’s inability to stay healthy.

New Additions and Roster Construction

Gervase arrived as part of the Reds-Rays trade last year that also brought over Ben Rortvedt and Adam Serwinowski. Barnes was claimed off waivers from the Cubs. McDermott was acquired in a small-time trade with the Orioles. Hernández is a former Rangers pitcher.

The Dodgers excel at assembling rosters that are good enough to compete, even if they don’t always look impressive on paper.

Offensive Performance and Team Outlook

There are some concerns because the offense isn’t performing at its peak. However, some of the hitters are starting to find their form. If the offense can improve while the pitching staff continues to undergo changes, the team should be able to manage.
