Casey Schmitt is on a tear.
The Giants’ do-it-all super utility player homered again in San Francisco’s 8-5 win over the Chicago White Sox at Oracle Park. With his 11th long ball of the season, Schmitt accomplished something only one Giants player had done in 126 years.
Schmitt Joins Exclusive Giants Club
Casey Schmitt now has a home run this year as a 1B, 2B, 3B, LF & DH.
The only other Giants player since at least 1900 to homer playing 5+ different positions (excluding PH) in a season was Alvin Dark in 1953, who played SS, 2B, LF, RF, and 3B.
Versatility on Display
Schmitt got the start at first base on Sunday.
He has homered in games while playing second, third, left field and as a designated hitter this season.
The 27-year-old has also played 54 games at shortstop in his MLB career, including one this season, so there is a chance he adds another position to the list.
At this rate, he also might want to invest in a catcher’s mitt.
