The Los Angeles Dodgers suffered a 4-3 loss against the Colorado Rockies at Dodger Stadium on Tuesday. Despite the defeat, Shohei Ohtani made history by becoming the first Japanese player to hit 300 home runs in MLB. Left-handed starter Justin Wrobleski also delivered a strong performance, holding the Rockies to one run through seven innings.
Ohtani’s Historic Homer and All-Star Selection
Shohei Ohtani reached a significant career milestone on Tuesday, becoming the first Japanese player to achieve 300 home runs in Major League Baseball. His impressive season has already seen him voted in as the first National League All-Star this year. Ohtani’s consistent performance has cemented his place among the league’s elite.
Wrobleski’s Strong Case Amidst All-Star Lobbying
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts has been actively lobbying for Justin Wrobleski to be named a replacement player for the upcoming All-Star Game. Wrobleski strengthened his case by holding the Rockies to just one run over seven innings, inducing weak contact and recording nine strikeouts. The only run he conceded came on a groundout in the sixth inning with runners on the corners.
Roberts highlighted Wrobleski’s statistics, noting his 2.69 ERA, which ranks eighth among qualified NL pitchers, his average of more than six innings per start, and his 10 wins. The manager expressed concern that Wrobleski might be disadvantaged by the Dodgers’ six-man rotation, potentially limiting his number of starts. Wrobleski himself admitted disappointment at not receiving the initial All-Star nod, stating, “You want to be an All-Star. It’s something that, regardless of the year, whenever, it’s always a big deal.” He added that it was “frustrating to not get that nod” but saw it as “more reason to try and keep getting better.”
Pitching Staff All-Star Prospects and Roster Shifts
Roberts is also advocating for left-handed reliever Tanner Scott, despite Scott’s recent performance. Scott, who recorded his second blown save on Monday, holds 12 saves and a 2.70 ERA. Roberts believes Scott “is one of the elite relievers in the National League.”
Earlier on Tuesday, MLB announced replacements for three NL pitchers who would not be eligible to appear in the All-Star Game. Pittsburgh’s Braxton Ashcraft, Philadelphia’s Jesús Luzardo, and St. Louis’ Riley O’Brien claimed spots as Pittsburgh’s Paul Skenes, Milwaukee’s Jacob Misiorowski, and Miami’s Max Meyer bowed out. There is an expectation of continued movement on the All-Star roster, particularly on the pitching side, due to rotation schedules. For instance, Dodgers right-hander Yoshinobu Yamamoto is set to start on Saturday, which could make him unavailable for the All-Star Game next Tuesday. This potential unavailability could create an opening for both Wrobleski and Scott.
As discussions continue regarding All-Star roster changes, especially concerning pitching availabilities, the performances of players like Wrobleski could remain under consideration for a late call-up. Eliezer Alfonzo, the Dodgers catcher, also made his major league debut, going 0 for 2.
