Former world No.3 Grigor Dimitrov is set to compete in the Roland Garros qualifying rounds. He joins other notable names vying for a spot in the main draw.
Dimitrov’s Path to the Main Draw
Dimitrov aims to secure his place in the Roland Garros main draw through the qualifying rounds. He will face Portuguese 10th seed Jaime Faria in his opening match. Dimitrov will bid to claim just his third win this season.
Other Notable Players in Qualifying
Dimitrov is not the only high-profile player in the qualifying rounds. Former US Open singles champions Sloane Stephens and Bianca Andreescu are also competing. Ex-world No.1 Karolina Pliskova joins them as contenders this week. Former No.7 David Goffin is also participating, marking his 14th Paris campaign.
The Qualifying Draws Unveiled
The qualifying draws were released on Sunday. Top seeds Lanlana Tararudee and Jesper de Jong learned their opponents. World No.99 Tararudee starts against Greece’s Despina Papamichail. 102nd-ranked De Jong faces China’s Sun Fajing.
Stephens, a 2017 US Open champion, opens against fellow American Carol Young Suh Lee. Andreescu, the 2019 winner at Flushing Meadows, faces 17-year-old French wildcard Daphnee Mpetshi Perricard.
Other Players to Watch
Several other players are worth watching in the men’s qualifying rounds. These include South African former world No.31 Lloyd Harris. Also competing are third seed Emilio Nava, and young talents Joel Schwaerzler, Rei Sakamoto, Shintaro Mochizuki, Elmer Moller and Michael Zheng.
In the women’s qualifying, keep an eye on former junior Australian Open champions Alina Korneeva and Victoria Jimenez Kasintseva. Other young talents include Robin Montgomery, Linda Fruhvirtova and Sofia Costoulas.
Goffin, who made the fourth round on debut as a lucky loser in 2012, meets Chinese Taipei’s Tseng Chun-hsin. Dimitrov was a quarterfinalist in Paris two years ago.
