Denny Hamlin Praises Kyle Busch, Offers Unexpected Truce

Denny Hamlin has offered an unexpected olive branch to Kyle Busch, despite previously questioning Busch’s performance. Hamlin’s comments came after Busch showed signs of improvement following a crew chief change. The two drivers have a history of exchanging verbal jabs, making Hamlin’s change in tone surprising.

Busch’s Improved Performance

Kyle Busch’s performance has improved since Andy Street took over as his crew chief after the race at Talladega. Busch had what seemed to be the worst start to a season in his entire career, but has managed to achieve top 10 finishes more recently. While this does not guarantee him a championship, it is a strong response to Hamlin’s earlier doubts.

Busch told the media ahead of the All-Star race, “I guess I just remembered how to drive.” He also credited Street for his contribution as crew chief.

Hamlin’s Change of Heart

Hamlin acknowledged Busch’s recent performance and his place in the sport. “He said it backstage, and then he said it again on the stage. You know, his little comment of, ‘I guess I still know how to do it.’ I’m like, ‘Yeah, awesome job, man. It’s a good job.’ I don’t know what you’d say. I said you’re on the Mount Rushmore of NASCAR drivers. I mean, I think it’s awesome,” Hamlin said on the Actions Detrimental podcast.

Previously, Hamlin suggested that Busch needed a significant change to return to form. “You’re going to be very disappointed. I just think that until we change cars or something changes, something has to change. I don’t know what.”

Crew Chief Change Impacts Busch

Busch struggled after joining Richard Childress Racing in the 2023 season, despite some decent performances. His pairing with crew chief Jim Pohlman did not prove successful. “It’s the same sh*t every week,” Busch remarked at Bristol after finishing 25th.

Following the race at Talladega, Richard Childress moved Pohlman into a different role and promoted Andy Street to crew chief for the #8 team. Since then, Busch has shown improvement, competing well within the top 10 at Texas and finishing eighth at Watkins Glen. He also secured a top 20 finish at Dover during the All-Star race.

Hamlin stated, “I think it’s really good for him for the track time, and I think it’s good for him on the mental state […] I think, you know, if this puts him back on the track of being competitive, I am for Kyle Busch running every Friday and Saturday ra
