Crystal Palace are one step closer to a major European final after securing their place in the Conference League semi-finals. They held off a Fiorentina fightback, despite losing 2-1 on the night.
The Eagles had established a strong 3-0 lead from the first leg at Selhurst Park.
Sarr’s Early Goal Proves Decisive
Fiorentina fans created an electric atmosphere before kick-off, hoping to inspire their side to a comeback. However, their hopes were dented when Ismaila Sarr headed Palace into the lead after 17 minutes, meeting a cross from Daniel Munoz.
That made the aggregate score 4-0, but the hosts responded when they were awarded a penalty in the 30th minute. Jaydee Canvot was adjudged to have caught Rolando Mandragora inside the box, and Albert Gudmundsson converted the penalty, sending Eagles keeper Dean Henderson the wrong way.
Injuries and Fiorentina Fightback
Fiorentina’s hope intensified when substitute Cher Ndour struck from outside the box eight minutes into the second half.
Henderson then made a good save to deny Gudmundsson as Fiorentina chased more goals. Palace, however, stood firm to secure their place in the next round.
Progression came at a cost for Palace, who lost both Adam Wharton and Maxence Lacroix to first-half injuries. Manager Oliver Glasner will be hoping the injuries are not serious.
Semi-Final Showdown Awaits
Palace will now face Shakhtar Donetsk in the semi-finals. The Ukrainian side beat AZ 5-2 on aggregate after a 2-2 draw in the Netherlands.
- Ismaila Sarr has scored seven goals in this season’s Conference League.
- Palace led 3-0 from last week’s first leg.
- The Eagles beat Manchester City to win the FA Cup last May.
This has been a dream 12 months for Crystal Palace fans.
Palace fans had travelled in numbers to Italy to witness the Eagles seal progression. The party atmosphere did give way to some nervousness in the second half as Fiorentina battled back to reduce the deficit to two goals.
Sarr’s goal in this tie proved crucial, ensuring Fiorentina were ultimately left with too much to do. The Senegal forward has found form in the Conference League, with five of his seven goals in the competition having been scored since the start of February.
Palace fans were in excellent voice throughout the game.
