Cruz Azul Sack Manager Larcamón Despite Playoff Qualification

Nicolás Larcamón is out as manager of Cruz Azul. Despite the team being classified for the Liguilla of the Clausura 2026, the board decided to terminate his contract. An official announcement has been made.

Larcamón’s Dismissal Follows Poor Run of Form

The decision follows a run of six games without a win in the local tournament. The last three of those games ended in identical 1-1 draws. There was also the elimination in the Quarter Finals of the Concacaf Champions Cup 2026 at the hands of LAFC.

Cruz Azul have officially confirmed the departure of Nicolás Larcamón. They stated it was due to “an undeniable negative inertia in results and form, which has resonated with our fans, the institution’s greatest asset, and whose criticisms we hear”.

Cruz Azul are currently fourth in the Liga MX Clausura 2026 with 30 points after 16 games. They have one game left to play against Necaxa in Jornada 17.

The club acknowledged the timing of the decision could be seen as controversial, but after in-depth analysis, they believe this is an opportunity to intervene ahead of the Liguilla. They hope to change the trend and protect the sporting project.

Huiqui Steps in as Interim Manager

Joel Huiqui has been chosen as the interim manager. He will be supported by Sergio Pinto as assistant coach and Marco Calvillo as second assistant. Fernando Ramos will be the fitness coach, backed by Jorge Martínez.

Search Begins for New Manager

Cruz Azul have begun the search for a new manager ahead of the Apertura 2026 season, after the 2026 World Cup. Several names are expected to be considered for the role in the coming weeks.

Cruz Azul are currently fourth in the table with 30 points. Should they remain in the top four, they will play the second leg of the Quarter Finals at home.
