Collin Morikawa’s timing on the PGA Tour this season has proven beneficial. The two-time major champion started 2025 with a missed cut at the Sony Open and a tie for 54th at the WM Phoenix Open. However, he has since recorded three consecutive starts finishing seventh or higher in PGA Tour Signature events.
Morikawa’s Rise to the Top
Morikawa’s Signature event performances included a victory at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, a tie for seventh at the Genesis Invitational and a solo fifth at the Arnold Palmer Invitational. These results translated to chunks of 700, 176 and 300 FedEx Cup points. This has allowed Morikawa to slide up three spots to take over the lead in the season-long points standings, surpassing Jacob Bridgeman.
Akshay Bhatia also experienced a significant jump, moving from 16th to second after his victory at the Palmer Invitational.
Ricky Castillo, following his win at the Puerto Rico Classic, earned 300 points. This moved him up 29 spots from 52nd to 23rd.
The Players Championship Looms
The upcoming Players Championship, commencing on March 12 at the Players Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass, presents a significant opportunity for further movement in the standings. The tournament offers 750 FedEx Cup points to the winner, with substantial points awarded throughout the leaderboard.
Morikawa’s lead over Bhatia is a mere 38 points. A missed cut by Morikawa could see Bhatia overtake him with a finish of 29th or better.
- Morikawa leads Bhatia by 38 points.
- Morikawa is ahead of Bridgeman by 59 points.
- Morikawa has a 62-point lead over Chris Gotterup.
Despite the narrow margin, Morikawa is tipped by many experts to win the tournament. He could solidify his position at the top of the standings.
Through the Arnold Palmer Invitational, Morikawa has capitalised on the PGA Tour Signature Events.
