Indiana Fever coach Stephanie White has ruled out Caitlin Clark for Thursday night’s road matchup against the Phoenix Mercury, despite the star player stating she feels “100 percent physically.” Thursday night’s decision ahead of the game raises more questions than answers.
The official injury report listed the reason for Clark’s absence as “rest.” This ruling came even though Clark herself expressed positive feedback regarding her physical condition after her return to play on Wednesday night.
Clark’s Condition and Coach’s Plan
After returning Wednesday night from a lingering back injury, Clark logged 16 carefully managed minutes against the Los Angeles Sparks. Following this game, Clark felt encouraged by how her body responded to the action. She told trainers after the game that while it was disappointing not to win and not to play very well, she would take it as a win regarding how her body felt and how she felt out there.
Clark further elaborated that she didn’t even feel very winded after her time on court. However, before the Wednesday game even tipped off, the Fever had already ruled her out against the Mercury. Fever head coach Stephanie White revealed before Wednesday’s game that the plan all along was to split the back-to-back between Clark and All-Star forward Aliyah Boston.
White stated that Boston did some shooting and was going to be out that night with the back-to-back. She added that Caitlin was going to be active, Aliyah Boston was not, and then they would flip-flop the next day. This strategy saw Clark play on Wednesday, with the understanding she would sit out Thursday’s encounter.
Player Assessment Versus Team Strategy
Clark’s own assessment of her body’s response provided the Fever with new information, but the original plan for managing the back-to-back never changed. She said that overall, her body felt great, which was the positive she could take from Wednesday’s performance.
During Wednesday’s game, Coach White’s strategy was to put Clark out for three-minute spurts throughout the contest. Clark commented that it is really hard when you are playing three minutes, then subbed out, then three minutes, then three minutes again, then you are on the bench. She found it really, really hard to get into a flow under those circumstances.
Clark explained that for the most part, she got good looks, with some going in and some not. She believed she probably did not get to have a feel for the game as she usually does, noting it is really, really hard for her to play in that scenario.
Fever’s Cautionary Approach
The Indiana Fever are entitled to be cautious with their star player. Protecting Clark is understandable given her importance to the franchise. Clark is considered the face of the franchise and the engine behind Indiana’s offense.
Her managed minutes on Wednesday, totalling 16, reflect this cautious approach. Despite Clark’s clear statements about feeling physically well, the team’s long-term strategy for player health appears to be taking precedence.
Thursday’s matchup against the Mercury presents another test for the Fever. With Clark ruled out for the game, the plan involves Aliyah Boston being active after having sat out Wednesday’s fixture against the Sparks.
