Chesterfield have clinched a League Two play-off spot after a 2-1 victory over Swindon Town. The win dashed Swindon’s hopes of promotion. Dilan Markanday scored the decisive goal in a match that saw both sides battling for a place in the top seven.
Spireites Take the Lead, Swindon Respond
Chesterfield could have been ahead early on when Lewis Gordon found Markanday, but he skied his effort. The visitors broke the deadlock in the 19th minute when Lee Bonis jabbed home after a miscued shot from Armando Dobra. Ryan Stirk had a chance to double the lead, but fired over after a quick break.
Swindon, needing a win, levelled on the stroke of half-time. Aaron Drinan picked out Ben Middlemas, who sidefooted the ball home.
Markanday Secures the Win
Chesterfield regained the lead in the 61st minute. A blistering move on the left saw a backheel set off Dobra, who squared to Markanday to touch in on the goal line.
Chesterfield goalkeeper Ryan Boot made a double save from Ollie Palmer to preserve the lead. Paul Cook’s side held on to secure the win and keep their promotion hopes alive.
Late Substitutions and Desperate Attempts
Chesterfield made substitutions to see out the game. Will Dickson replaced Sammy Braybrooke, Will Grigg replaced Lee Bonis, and James Berry replaced Armando Dobra.
