Cherki’s Rise: From Manchester City Bench to Key Player

Rayan Cherki is now a driving force for Manchester City as they chase a domestic treble.

The French international is consistently in the team, usually only taken off towards the end of matches. His performances have drawn praise from manager Pep Guardiola, who admires his ‘free spirit’ and how he handles pressure.

Cherki’s Winter on the Bench

Earlier in the season, Guardiola wasn’t as complimentary, with Cherki spending more time on the bench. However, the former Lyon player didn’t give up or get frustrated. He regained his place in the team and contributed to City’s recent successes, including providing two assists in their 3-0 victory against Chelsea.

Champions League Turning Point

A turning point in Cherki’s season came after the 3-0 defeat to Real Madrid. Despite expecting to start in the match at the Bernabeu, he was a substitute, similar to his role in the Cup match against Newcastle days earlier.

Although he showed some frustration, he didn’t ask Guardiola for explanations, believing it would be pointless. Guardiola realised that playing four attackers, including three wingers, wasn’t effective against Real Madrid.

Finding His Best Position

After experimenting with different formations, Guardiola reverted to a 4-2-3-1 system in the Cup quarter-final against Liverpool, where he played Cherki in the number 10 role. This is considered his best position, allowing him complete freedom.

He also regained his full fitness, which had been an issue in February. He had suffered a heavy blow to his thigh during the draw against Tottenham, and the resulting hematoma took time to heal.

Settling in at City

Although his juggling during the League Cup final was met with mixed reactions in the UK, Guardiola has been protective of Cherki. The manager has entrusted him with a key role in the team’s play.

His integration into the squad has been aided by Ruben Dias and Bernardo Silva. Cherki has provided ten assists in the Premier League this season.

Guardiola saw that using four attackers wasn’t the solution. He has now entrusted Cherki with the keys to the game.
