Charlotte 49ers Hire Wes Miller as Basketball Coach

Charlotte have hired Wes Miller as their men’s basketball coach. The school made the announcement on Monday. Sources indicate that Miller has agreed to a five-year deal.

Miller’s Coaching History

Miller brings 15 seasons of head coaching experience to Charlotte, having previously been in charge at Cincinnati and UNC Greensboro. He has advanced to two NCAA tournaments during his career. Prior to his time at Cincinnati, Miller spent 10 seasons as the head coach at UNC Greensboro. There, he posted a 185-135 record with the Spartans. During his final five seasons at UNC Greensboro, he established himself as one of the best mid-major coaches in the country, going 125-43, winning three regular-season championships in the Southern Conference, and making two NCAA tournament appearances.

Cincinnati Tenure

Cincinnati fired Miller earlier this month. He failed to take the Bearcats to the NCAA tournament during his five seasons in charge. Hired in 2021, Miller ended each of the past four seasons on the wrong side of the bubble, despite winning 20 games in 2022-23 and 2023-24. This season, they finished 9-9 in Big 12 play.

New Leadership at Charlotte

Athletic director Kevin White said Miller is a proven leader with a deep understanding of the game and strong ties to basketball in North Carolina. White added that Miller’s passion, competitive energy, and clear vision for building a championship culture stood out. Miller is a marquee hire for White, who took over as athletic director in late February, giving the 49ers a proven head coach with name recognition in the region.

Miller said that Charlotte is a university with tremendous momentum, a passionate city behind it, and deep basketball roots in North Carolina. He added that he and his staff will pour everything they have into developing their student-athletes, competing at the highest level, and building a team that the campus and city will be proud to rally around. He believes the foundation is here for something special.

Replacing Aaron Fearne

Miller replaces Aaron Fearne, who was fired last week after three seasons at the helm. Fearne went 19-12 and finished third in the American in his first season in 2023-24. However, they went 3-15 in conference play last season and struggled mightily down the stretch this season.

Miller is the son of Kenneth D. Miller, whose name is on the Wake Forest athletic facility. He started his college career at James Madison before transferring to North Carolina to play for Roy Williams. Miller won a national championship with the Tar Heels in 2005.
