Carlos Correa Injury: Astros Star Set for Season-Ending Surgery

Houston Astros shortstop Carlos Correa is facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines. A source has confirmed that he has suffered a significant injury to his left ankle that will require season-ending surgery. This is another major injury blow for the club.

Correa’s Injury Details

Correa sustained the injury while taking swings in the batting cage prior to Tuesday’s win over the Dodgers. In Monday’s game against the Dodgers, Correa went 0-for-4. So far this season he has a .279/.369/.418 slash line with three homers and 16 RBIs.

Leadership Loss in the Clubhouse

Correa’s influence extends beyond his stats. The Astros traded for him last July, reacquiring him from the Twins, because they needed his leadership in the clubhouse. Astros first baseman Christian Walker noted that Correa is a cornerstone in the clubhouse and that the guys lean on him for leadership.

The 15-22 Astros will now have to attempt to climb back into the race in the American League West without their de facto captain. Walker added that his presence will continue to be felt, and the team will continue to pray for him and stay positive.

Impact on the Astros’ Lineup

Correa joins a growing list of injured Astros players. He will be the fourth member of the Astros’ Opening Day lineup to land on the IL. The others are catcher Yainer Diaz, left fielder Joey Loperfido, and center fielder Jake Meyers.

Starting shortstop Jeremy Peña is also recovering from an injury. He is getting close to game action and could be sent out on Minor League rehab this weekend.

Paredes to Step Up

The Astros had previously looked to trade third baseman Isaac Paredes. However, injuries to Peña and now Correa mean the club is happy to have kept Paredes. He’ll be the starter at third base going forward, with Peña back at shortstop when he’s activated.

Correa helped Peña prepare for the starting shortstop role while he was in the Minor Leagues. He was pleased when Peña was named MVP of the ALCS and World Series as a rookie in ‘22. Following the trade from Minnesota last year, Correa moved to third to accommodate Peña.

Correa’s Injury History

Correa has faced numerous injuries throughout his career. However, Tuesday’s injury could be the most devastating yet for him.
