Canelo Alvarez is set to make his return to boxing, facing Christian Mbilli for the WBC super-middleweight title. The fight is scheduled for September 12 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. This will be Alvarez’s first fight since his defeat to Terence Crawford.
Alvarez Aims to Reclaim Title
Alvarez will be aiming to reclaim one of the titles he previously held when he faces WBC super-middleweight world champion Christian Mbilli. “After so many years in this sport, my motivation is still the same: to challenge myself, represent Mexico, and continue building my legacy,” Alvarez said.
Alvarez added, “Mbilli is undefeated, and a great fighter, and I respect that. But my focus is always on my preparation, performance, and giving the fans another great night of boxing. On September 12 in Riyadh, we begin a new chapter with the same discipline, ambition, and vision that has carried me throughout my career.”
Alvarez was previously the dominant undisputed super-middleweight champion until Crawford defeated him in Las Vegas last year. Crawford has since retired, allowing Mbilli to rise through the ranks and claim the WBC world championship. Alvarez has not fought since his loss to Crawford.
Mbilli Promises a Historic Victory
Mbilli commented on the upcoming fight: “My last fight was the fight of the year. In September, against Canelo Alvarez, it will be the fight of the decade. And when the fight is over, the world will witness a historic victory for me.”
The bout promises a clash of styles. Mbilli is known for his explosive power and aggressive fighting style. This contrasts with Alvarez, whose counter-punching relies on opponents’ mistakes.
Stylistic Matchup Favours an Exciting Fight
Top Rank president Todd duBoef said, “I think stylistically for both guys, it’s a good fight. Canelo needs [Mbilli’s style] too. He needs a guy that’s going to come to him – that’s where he really excels.” DuBoef added, “That’s an excellent stylistic fight. You can see the styles come together.”
The fight is set for September 12 in Riyadh.
